DA Confusion for the 21st of October, 2022

Apologies for the confusions last week — just slipped my mind to update this website.

But now, we’re back to normal — getting confused by DA.

  1. Thanks AS. All done. FOI 3D, LOI 19A. Didn’t like 13D. NW corner first , NE corner last.

  2. Where is everyone?

A typical DA today, plenty of smiles, nothing too contentious. I haven’t fully parsed 5d, but I’m sure it will happen. I particularly liked 10a & 12a.

  3. Every week I’m amazed that people finish so quickly. After an hour I have just four answers and one of those is dubious!!

  4. First pass 6a,15a,18a,26a,28a,4d,13d,14d,22d,25d except 6a wasn’t correct as I had Joker (anag of jerk and o, drawer being a card you draw, well it worked for me). That made the NE corner last to finish and discover the different word for 6a. LOI 8d.
On the easier end of the scale with only a couple of question marks.

  5. Graham M: I suspect some were put off by last week’s absence of this page.

Tim C: I made the same first stab at 6A.

    FOI 9A, 11A. LOI 15A, 8D. Liked 18A.

  6. Re8D: think of home as in ‘home base’.
Re19A: letters 4,5,6, think of frame as a unit of animation.

  7. I believe that Arthur would be more inclined to come up with rhyming slang for such a fur. Terry McCann would probably use 1D as is.

  8. FWIW, Brond, I really liked 13D!

Still moving slowly through it, E side largely empty.

  9. 5D is rather clumsy and has no anagrind unless ‘oddly’ does double duty.

  10. if anyone is still there I’m looking for gentle hints for 11A, 14A, 27A, 2D and 25D

  11. 11A, buffet is 1-3 and pizza top[ping is 4
14A, slang word for pubs, remove middle letter to give slang word for anti-cheerers
27A, years and years is 2-4 and dynasty is 1,5-7
2D, matching is 3-6, ground is 1,7-9, rule ultimately is 2
25D, plural of Latin word for ‘place’ is given backward in ‘semicolon’

  12. Thanks Jack!! That does it, all except for 14. I’ll think about it tomorrow.

  13. Like others, NE last. Agree that 5D seems to be missing something, no matter how I break it up and write it out.
Haven’t parsed 6D which no one else seems to have had trouble with.
Don’t understand the definition for 8D. Is that the literal/original meaning rather than the metaphoric one, due to the word ‘home’?

18A was clever but a giveaway when looking at 19A and realising there wasn’t a mistake.
This time 18A really meant 18A, which made me laugh.

SB, 14A is a phrase wishing actors good luck before a performance. ‘cast’ is the key word, but the whole clue leads to the answer and I think deserves the ?! (&lit) indication.

  14. Gayle, 6D has zip (1-4) then line at (5-10), resort being the anagrind as in re-sort.
Reading the thread, I now see that 8 D is referring to the baseball term.
I loved 18A. I got the answer but couldn’t see why, then doh!! This would be the hundredth time that DA has tricked me that way in a clue

  15. Gayle, 6D has zip (1-4) then line at (5-10), resort being the anagrind as in re-sort.

  16. Didn’t progress much further with this one.
A final request. Could I have an explanation for the definition and wordplay for 7D ? ( I get the useless houses bit). I’m amazed that all others are apparently familiar with this.

  17. Thanks Viv, I had the re-sort but for the life of me, couldn’t get the ‘zip’. Was trying to work a way with ‘nil’ in there but it would have been an indirect anagram.
And thanks for 8D. Sorry, Brond, missed your earlier explanation.

  18. Thanks Graham as always.
Still surprised everyone else knew it. These are the sort of answers (also 26A) which infuriate me.

  19. Finished at last Foi 7d had to Google
Loi 29a like a number of answers it …Ed on me. Can’t parse 9a and 5D

  20. IanS,
9a turned lush is 3,2,1 and there it is is 4-7
5d is a dodgy clue I recon because oddly seems to be doing double duty as an anagrind and a letter selection indicator. It’s an anagram of “cold” oddly twice (doubly) plus “icy” and a (at opening).

  21. Occasional reader, first time poster. My new GF and I collaborated on this one on Saturday am and finally finished it this morning over SMS. No cheating by reading this blog! We knocked off a few earlier puzzles easily, it was her idea to test ourselves with DA. No chance either could have solved it solo. She’s a keeper.

    Last to go:
Last night, 18A and 13D (me)
    Today, 21A (me), 14A and 8D (her)
