Finding DA Anywhere in the World

Peter, a frequent commenter, is off overseas shortly and asks how to access DA crosswords from far away on the last post.

RV and Ian chimed in with a very handy suggestion, something I’d never heard of before and might be of interest to any one of you, and here they are in their own words:

RV
Peter, if you can access the SMH smart edition you can see online the newspaper as it is in print, including the crossword. If you have a subscription to the SMH the smart edition access comes with it. you can also subscribe directly to the smart edition for a fee. any other way to see DA when away?

Ian
Yes, SMH Smart edition is what I do. Being a Melburnian but wanting the crossie on Friday like it always was, I buy a single edition every Friday ($2 a pop), navigate to the right page, and there is an option to print a selected area of the page. $2 is less than the coffee I drink while doing it.

  1. Thnaks. I knew od SMH smart edition, but have refused to pay the exorbitant prive for it, being told by SMH that the only options cost an arm and a leg. That is, I did not know that you could buy just one day at a time, and that looks by far the cheapest option for me, thanks Ian, I will explore that, and report back if there are any problems

  3. Hello RV & Ian : I have checked out the SMH smart edition, and can only get to a page which offers subscription for Fri-Sun or the whole week. Please let me know how to access the correct page for a 1-day subscription. Ta.

  4. Hi Peter. I subscribe to SMH newspaper so can access Smart Edition for free. I emailed SMH and the reply I got was that you can’t access Smart Edition on a one off basis, you have to pay $18 every 4 weeks which gives you 7 day access to the Smart Edition.

  5. I’m not sure if this is what Ian does for his friday DA fix, but I found out today that if you go to http://www.pressdisplay.com and search for sydney morning herald you can download single issues of the paper in the Smart Edition format for $0.99 US.

So much preferable to buying a 4 week subscription.

  6. Hi there, I’m confused by the comments above, as when I went to the SMH smart edition signup page today, it said that the cost is $18 for 6 MONTHS, not just 4 weeks… can anyone confirm before I hit the “submit” button!?
