  1. Re 4d: we cant build completely either – we have the definition, and maybe if 1a was your name it would make sense?

  2. Arthur C.
18A – difficult. Construct from wordplay is (4) then (5,6,7,8) in (1,2,3,9). Defn “fiend”.

    SonOfBruce.
Thanks. Actually, with internet help I now understand 4D.
To me very obscure, but “1 across, 6 down” apparently means something in some groups.

  3. All done. Couldn’t spell 18a properly to start with. Still working on some clues for word play as well.

  4. A little more achievable than last week’s, I must say. First one in 20a. Also easy starters 12a, 15a, 5a (not really “piano”, but a forerunner) and 21d. I have no idea of the wordplay in 4d. I liked 23a, 3d, although that’s one term for heroin (from the many) I was not familiar with.

Am I the only one finding this site very slow to load at times?

  5. Geoff M – Very slow – and gives my PC other issues – site redirects and errors.

  6. For 4d – Never heard of the expression 1a 6d but I can see how the clue fundamentally works.

I’m still a bit hazy about 2d and 6d in complete wordplay, I do get the definition.

I’m having a lot of problems with the site as well. It seems to have been partially hijacked.

  7. Margaret:
2D – yep – tricky – the first 3 “words” (the bits ending with ?) are all truncated.
    6D – “stuffing” = 1,2,3. “repeal, taking its toll” = 4,5.

    AND DEFINITELY “HIJACKED”.

  8. for 4d – the “1 across, 4 down” bit is still eluding me. I’m assuming that it’s somehow DA-referential. The “across 6 down” bit turned up A-VI-D but there was not sign of the initial D for that to make sense.

  9. Yeah, I thought 2d was something like that but, I thought, it wasn’t the greatest clue.

I do like 6d. I had thought of the other toll but I was working on 1&5 being the stuffing in repeal.

  10. Yes, also struggled with access today. FOI 1A. LOIs 2D/4D as I’m still not convinced about the wordplay. Favourite is 1D.

  11. I’m also not sure about the first truncated word in 2D. If the missing letter is an “e” doesn’t that make it equivalent to speed rather than time ?

  12. 4d – I think “1-across, 6-down” is a general reference (i.e. nothing to do with the answers to those clues) – think “one across” = horizontal, 6ft down

  13. Just finished trying to parse after all your help and then knowing the printed solution. I am 1D -or perhaps being dimmer than usual.

    Here are my guesses
12A: is ‘caboose’ an indicator of the last letter in ‘red’?
9D: is ‘bro?’ cricket runs in two blood groups.
    4D: nuff said already

  14. Can anyone help with
    1across is this about Succour?

And 1 down is tenfold e?

  15. Archangel, 1A is not about succour. Grandad gives us 6-8 which follows 1-5 which that sounds like a word for money. I rather prefer that the answer is the person holding the sucker…!

The tenfold in 1D applies when a five becomes a fifty! Any help?

  16. Oops!
I meant to write “I rather prefer that the sucker is the person holding the answer…!”

  17. Finally got 1 across and 1 down as finals.
Totally lost parsing 1 and 2 down?
    Any clues

  18. Helen and Archangel, 1d has to do with Roman numerals, specifically its first letter.

For 2d, three words (or in one case a pair of words) in the clue are (very loose) synonyms for “time”, but “limited” — their final letter removed.

  19. Have been unable to access datrippers, except fleetingly, then my posts don’t go through. Still dodgy accessing today. What is wrong? Please fix it!!! I bet dozens of posters were trying to get through only to be foiled by a system that’s 99% unresponsive. Aaaaaargh!

  21. Goodness, suddenly it’s Christmas (as Loudon Wainwright III sang).

    Final test this post

  22. Despite all of the hints, still can’t understand 1D. Also struggling with 16A and 14D; got everything else but those are eluding me.

  23. Ok finally cracked 14D and 16A; nothing extraordinary, just me being 16A perhaps. Still can’t parse 1D

  24. askvictor
    Roman numerals:
    V × X = L; or L ÷ V = X
    5 × 10 = 50; or 50 ÷ 5 = 10

“Steamed” is the definition, a state of mind, derived from an adjective for “graphic” by multiplying its first letter by 10, as in the example above.

  25. Concerning 1D
I can see that the definition is steamed but the intriguing thing is the final letter is 10 X the first and the 3rd letter is the first letter divided by 10. Is there an element of folding here ? Is the word lay on a 4 letter synonym for face starting with “d” and ending in “l” ?
For me this has to be the most convoluted (folded) clue that DA has served up in my memory !

  26. IanS, 1A is much simpler than you are thinking! The wordplay is only to do with the first letter.

‘Graphic’ gives you V as letter 1. The answer has this ‘face’ magnified or multiplied tenfold to L.

  27. I feel like invoking the spirit of Charlie Brown: “Good grief!”

    Thanks for the enlightenment.

  28. Thanks RobinH,
I didn’t get the significance of graphic you’re absolutely right the KISS principle is best every time. Sorry I didn’t get back earlier but have trouble accessing DA trippers along with others
