  1. Have all out. In my view some are typical DA convolutions eg: 10A, 15A, 14D/6D etc.

Also a lot of word truncations eg: 17A, 29A, 1D etc.

Still do not understand wordplay for 18A.

  2. Re: 18a my thoughts were coaches taking pains 1-2, to beat interminable 3-5

  3. Bill thanks much. Spot on. I had “coaches” as 1,5 and got stuck there. Thanks again.

  4. Whatever has happened to Celia? I’ve been printing out the grid he posts ages before my own paper arrives. Missing this morning!

  5. Yes, convolutions, truncations … poor surfaces, not much fun today I thought. Liked 15.

  6. Morning, fellow Trippers! A personal record for a DA, today, less than 40 minutes without needing to consult printed or electronic sources, including this forum. Too damn easy! Have a great Friday 13th everyone, ooroo!

  7. Can anyone help with word play for 10ac? I’m fairly sure I know the answer but can’t see how it works!

  8. Julia B – 10A – Defn = “20-across channel”. “to manipulate” gives a word for letters 1,2,3,4. “appeal case” gives 2 letters for letters 5,6 and 10,11 (“twice”). “arresting” = positioner. “cashier” gives a 3 letter word for letters 7,8,9.

  9. Finally back, after marathon, shopping, preparing & eating lunch. Was lost on 10A, other than first word. Ray (1114) fixed that. Rather lost on second word of 5A., hence , 8D. Only about five to go.

  10. All out fairly quickly (for me). Only thing I’m unsure of is the word play in 7D. I get how the first letter is arrived at, but ‘Madness’? How does that give letters 2 & 3?

  11. Thanks, Dave R (1224), I had entered that much earlier, without making the book connection. Incredible. Only one I’m uncertain of now is my 8D answer. Will try Googling to confirm it.

  12. Well, I now have an answer to 8D that satisfies half the clue, but how to connect it to Willy Waggadagger I have no idea.

  13. With a mixture of pleasure and pain I’ve worked out all the wordplays bar one. Help with letters 1-3 of 15A please

  14. Mike – 15A – “Black” = letter 1. “American writer” = letters 4,5,6,7. “and others” = letters 2,3,8,9. “penning” = positioner. “promise” = defn.

  15. I don’t think anybody’s mentioned 22d yet. I have booze, but no wordplay

  16. Mary – 22D – “Uplifting” = reverse indicator. “divine” gives a 7 letter word, with first and last letter removed (“endless”) for letters 5,4,3,2,1. Defn = “booze”.

  17. Slow start but the it all fell into place without hints. Still good to come here to see others comments

  18. Got all out but four, feeling terribly pleased, and then come here to discover this one was easy peasy, and everyone is done! And no clues to my missing 4: 1a, 11a, 3D, 4d!
