The Last of LR’s Four-Week Spell: 30th of September, 2013

Get into LR for this coming Monday.

If the roster stays true to form, it’ll be LR’s last of his four-week stint before returning another five weeks hence.

  1. 28A Trippers! Another enjoyable crossie from LR. 6B of variety and great surfaces, as always. Some nice misdirections and novel indicators. Got stuck on 24A trying to think of a Korean car until the mountain appeared. Liked 15D, 11A, 27A, 17D, 21D and 28A, amongst a good bunch. Now what to do on Monday until LR comes back again?

  2. Agree entirely Gayle. The brevity and smooth surface readings are reminiscent of DA’s clues. Deserving of a more regular appearance. Liked 28A and 19D.

  3. DA is on the radio in Melbourne all week. He’s standing in for the regular evening presenter on ABC 774 (I tried to post this before but it didn’t seem to work. Apologies if I’ve doubled up)

  4. Yes, some neat cluing and nice readings. Along with several others, I liked 28A – a *good* example of a definition that is both obscure yet 100% accurate (unlike DA!). One glitch in 4D – “bravado” is NOT “boastfulness”.

  5. Meh. Macquarie probably just can’t spell braggadoccio. ;-)

The OED has it as “a bold manner or a show of boldness intended to impress or intimidate”. Collins has it as “vaunted display of courage or self-confidence; swagger”, closer to Macquarie, but still not quite there. Tastes in dictionaries vary, I know.
