  1. AS , I think I might still be going on this next year! … only half a dozen done, but enjoyable so far.
Can see something taking shape in the inscription. Is there a connection with your wall poster which you recently posted?
Have been all around the world with some of the clues, but not much closer to the solutions. Trying to cherry pick some of the shorter words.

Is the manx comic dog also a diminutive Norwegian god?

Like 8D. Good name for a radio station .. and I found one in the US with that frequency. I got something very sleepy when I narrowed the search for Oz only.

Like the extended definition for 13A.

  2. Hey Gayle,

    Happy 2012!

And I hope this is one of those thematic crosswords that, after a long time scratching one’s head, all falls into place. Having said that, it’s a very peculiar theme, but something that should impress once it’s worked out (although a little bit of Google might come in handy).

The inscription has nothing to do with the wall poster. I made the inscription clues especially difficult because the inscription should tumble very easily once a couple are put in — although a word of warning: the inscription has been adapted to suit 26, 4 across.

You’re on the money with the Manx comic dog — but I supplied a misleading letter count as (3) when really is should be (1.1.1.), which I’ve since updated on the crossword. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I hope you continue enjoying it — and I hope the theme does indeed end up impressing. It was a tough one to make.

  3. Yeay, I cracked the code!! All the aspects started to come together at once. Had not heard of a 4A before, or a 26/4. Fascinating. Great work. Thankyou. On the home run now I hope.

About the inscription shape: at the beginning I sketched lines of 5,5,3,5 (across) on 4,7,4 (down) and could see a Chinese or Japanese pictogram. Threw me right off! And there were so many possibilities with 26/4. Had to take a guess at my umpteenth attempt and google. Bingo.

  4. Oh, I see you’ve put the solutions up already AS.
I’m not going to cheat, I’m not going to cheat …
It’s too good! Very interesting theme. And some lovely clues.

  5. I, too, am trying not to look at the solutions. I have been intermittent in my efforts so far and only have eight (possibly nine) clues out. As just one of those is part of the inscription I’m still floundering.
