The rest of the evening saw me get to within 4 or 5. I am glad I resisted the temptation to look at the solution on Saturday, because I got 2 of my best ah-hahs then and around noon Sunday, leaving me one short, namely the aforementioned "cockylora". Never heard of it either. The SMH for 9 Aug 2005 has a nice reminiscence of this schoolyard game: "The adrenaline in those rushes was incredible. I remember Bart Rizzutto would often be the last, and looking at a tennis court of about 50 kids he would get really serious and take off his shoes before setting off, taking his time for dramatic effect while everyone waited. If you were lucky enough and close enough, he would hand them to you to carry for him. I remember one time following about 10 paces behind, a little sycophant with eyes bulging, and he was ahead in the heat of battle, leaving kids sprawled on the ground and turned inside out, as I trotted behind, jumping over the carnage." Wikipedia's list of traditional children's games mentions British Bulldog as a tag-based game, along with "Cocky Olly".
